Seville is a city that has it all. From beautiful monuments, and smaller attractions, historic neighborhoods, and modern architectural wonders, there really is something for everyone. And that’s before we’ve even started talking about the food. This is a city where there are just as many upscale restaurants and modern tapas bars to be found, as there are cozy nooks with elderly Spanish men propped up on the bar and traditional Andalusian tapas dominating the chalk-etched menu.
You’re going to hear a lot of different legends about tapas during your time in Spain. But first, do you know what a tapa is?
Tapas are a variety of small savoury Spanish dishes, often served as a snack with drinks, or with other tapas as a meal. To “tapear”, going from bar to bar for drinks and tapas, is an essential part of the social culture of Spain, especially in the south, and is something that every visitor to Spain should experience. Because tapas are informal, and the bars are often busy, they are commonly eaten standing up at the bar or at small tables or even upturned barrels, and the atmosphere is convivial and noisy. In most tapas bars in Sevilla you will see traditionally cured hams hanging from the rafters, and many bars are decorated with posters for bullfights, Semana Santa (holy week) and the Feria de Abril (spring fair).
As soon as you arrive in Seville, you’re going to run into a problem. There are too many places to eat. In fact, there are over 3,000 tapas bars and restaurants in Seville.
So, how do you know what place is right for you to eat in, and what kind of eating experience you would enjoy?
