Introduction

Spain is the largest producer of olive oil in the world and 80% of Spanish total production is in Andalusia.

The history of olive oil in Spain spans to 6,000 years ago when it appeared with the Phoenician and Greek settlers. The importance of olive oil to Spain is as important if not more compared to celebrated Spanish wine. The abundance of grape varieties and vast amounts of land plantation makes Spain the third biggest wine producers in the world

In this tour, you will be able to experience a combination of two most valued items in the Spanish culinary world, olive oil and wine. This tour will take you to visit Cordoba’s expansive olive groves and a 18th century olive oil mill located in a charming white village. There, you can learn about all the different characteristics, culinary uses and health benefits of olive oil. Experience a fun and delicious tasting session.

Day by day itinerary

DAY 1:
CORDOBA

  •  09:30AM:
  • Meet your foodie expert in front of the main door of Victoria Market. Your Foodie expert will park the car directly opposite the front door.
  • Drive to the south of the county and enjoy the wonderful landscape. After 20 minutes of driving, we visit a typical family olive oil mill and the countryside. There, you’ll learn to recognize good olive oil by its freshness and flavour, discover the ancient art of olive oil making, and find out what makes good olive oil so special.
  • If your visit is between November and January, you can be part of the harvest. Learn how the olives are picked!
  • After a sample of bread, olive oil, and coffee we depart for the next stop. We head to a cellar in the Montilla region where we learn the process of making wine accompanied by a foodie and wine expert.
  • Then, we gather in the cellar for a wine tasting. Taste five wines that are aged in different barrels depending on their characteristics. They can be aged to joven, fino, oloroso, amontillado, or sweet Pedro Ximénez. Learn the difference between each type of wine and how to enjoy them with local Andalusian cheeses.

Our trip to Montilla, Diego was our guide. The main components of our visit were excellent, and we were especially pleased to see the olive estate while harvesting was actually in progress. The visit to the winery in Montilla was excellent. Diego was also very helpful in sorting out a problem when we realised after the event that the winery had given us a different wine from the one we intended to buy.
