General information and recomendations about the selected destination
Barcelona with its fantastic location facing the inviting Mediterranean Sea and centuries of careful control and planning is one of the world’s great cities. There’s the world class Museums like Museu d’Art de Catalunya and museums dedicated to the artists Picasso, Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies. Marvel at it’s incredible Gothic and Art Noveau architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Everywhere there’s vibrancy from Las Ramblas to its wide, landscaped boulevards and cool beaches. In the centre is the pedestrian friendly Old Town (Ciutat Vella) which starts in the harbour/Old Port area and includes the Barri Gòtic, its medieval heart, then there’s the Ramblas until Plaça de Catalunya or El Raval.
There’s the prominent hill, Montjuïc full of beautiful parks, gardens and museums and the Olympic Stadium. A cable car connects this with Barceloneta, the waterfront close to the Parc de la Ciutadella. It’s in the Ensanche area where you’ll find amazing architectural gems including Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia begun in 1882 it’s now nearing completion! Lose yourself in chic neighbourhoods like Gràcia with its lovely neighbourhood squares full of bars.
Go and admire the views of this great city from Gaudí’s Parc Güell or the less well known The Bunker, one of Barcelona’s secrets. Getting around is easy as the city is relatively flat and is well served by public transport including the metro. Have we mentioned yet el Camp Nou home of the mighty Barcelona Football Club with its Museum one of the most visited attractions in the city after Sagradia Familia and Parc Güell !
As far it’s gastronomy a visit to La Boqueria market is essential. There’s so many places to eat from tapas to catalan cuisine or international restaurants including the famous Barrio Chino. There’s also the breweries of Estrella Damm and Moritz and the local wines from the region are well worth trying.
Barcelona is a great base to explore the rest of Catalonia but sights closeby worth exploring include the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat as well as beach resorts like Castelldefels and Sitges.
