The Costa del Sol (sunshine coast) is where the sun always seems to shine all year round. Extending either side of Málaga it’s Europe’s most developed resort area with so many hotel/apartment complexes to choose from and plenty of nice beaches. It’s packed with leisure activities to pursue like golf, water sports, amusements, horse-riding, walking etc. Its concentration of tourists and vibrancy a reflection of the abundance and diversity of cheap flights serving the region.
The choice of resorts are impressive too : Nerja, Torremolinos, Málaga, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona inter alia. Málaga is underrated and has much to admire including its history with Picasso, its fortresses at Alcazaba and Gibralfaro as well as its beaches and shops! Nerja is worth a visit to see its caves. West of Málaga at Torremolinos it’s Old Town is worth exploring along with the area around La Carihuela. Then there’s the family resort of Fuengirola. Estepona is attractive and boasts an amazing fish market.
Marbella deserves special mention as the Costa del Sol’s top and most luxurious resort full of the rich from Arabs to Russians. It has an attractive Old Town. It’s marina and casino complex at Puerto Banús is worth a visit if only to do some people watching, window shopping or admire all the sports cars parked there!
The Costa del Sol is also an ideal base in which to explore the rest of Andalusia or further afield. Top places to explore include Seville, Cádiz, Jerez, Córdoba, Jaén, Granada, Ronda and Almeria inter alia.
