General information and recomendations about the selected destination
Andalucía (Andalusia) is full of amazing moorish monuments, a reminder of the seven centuries of Berber/Arab rule until the Reconquest in 1492 when the Catholic Castillian nobles took over and Sevilla became an important trading point with the Spanish colonies. The moorish influence is most readily seen in Córdoba, Sevilla and Granada. But Andalusia’s history is much older with greek, phoenician and roman influences. There’s Alhambra Palace in Granada one of the wonders of the world. In Sevilla it’s the ornate Royal Place the Alcázar and the old quarter of Santa Cruz. Córdoba is famous the world over for its Mezquita, the largest and most stunning mosque ever built by the moors.
Facing the Mediterranean there’s the Costa del Sol where the sun always seem to shine. Andalusia has a beautiful interior too including the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Las Alpujarras and the olive covered hills around Jaén. The coast is home to a vast array of resorts and beaches near Málaga but there’s quieter stretches too at Huelva in the Costa de la Luz facing the Atlantic Ocean and between Cádiz and Tarifa and around Almería. Doñana National Park is home to an amazing diversity of wildlife.
Encounter the real Spain of spectacular, white washed hilltop villages with their courtyards, balconies and floral displays like in Mijas, Ronda or Arcos de la Frontera. The home of flamenco with images of Carmen in her gypsy dress or the appeal of Don Juan and the bullfighting. Then there’s the fiestas, ferias and romerías like the pilgrimage to El Rocío and Easter (Semana Santa) processions in Málaga, Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba and Jerez de la Frontera.
There’s the tapas culture too of eating in an outdoor terrace all year round ; fried fish/seafood, gazpacho, cured serrano ham or fresh cheese drizzled with extra virgin olive oil followed by honey or almond based sweets, a legacy from the moorish period. A siesta and unforgettable experiences await the adventurous.
